Carr, Lynch and Sandell's Master Plan for 4-1/2 Miles of East River Bikeway and Esplanade, prepared for the NYC Economic Development Corporation provides a new public edge for the waterfront of Manhattan. The project challenge was to provide both North south access and linear connection westward through many tight and demanding conditions. Design guidelines provide for continuity of dimensions and critical elements with flexibility to respond to varying contexts. CLS designed the first 3/4-mile long public stretch of waterfront, running from the Fulton Fish Market to the East River Park. This key section of New York City's bikeway and esplanade system offers spectacular views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, Downtown Brooklyn, and the Lower Manhattan skyline.
