Central Square
Cambridge, MA
Carr, Lynch and Sandell followed its Central Square Master Plan with designs for streetscape improvements and the creation of public settings complementing the multi-cultural life of Central Square. The implementation narrowed the overly wide traffic corridor creating shorter pedestrian crosswalks and articulated the streetscape with rhythmic series of block-length street. Trees and bench groupings as well as low scaled sidewalk lighting make the square a pleasing and comfortable environment for pedestrians. CLS also designed canopies for a public walkway and bus shelters. Intensive community participation and collaborative work with the artists Ritsuko Taho, Anes Fosse and contribute to the vibrancy of Square.
